Why use a Fountain Pen rather than a Ballpoint Pen?

Why should I use a Fountain Pen rather than a Ballpoint Pen?

This is a question we get asked a fair bit. So here is a super quick rundown of the main reasons you should consider using a fountain pen.

Why you should use a fountain pen

Writing Experience: A fountain pen provides a smoother and more comfortable writing experience than a ballpoint pen, as the nib glides across the paper more easily. This can make writing for extended periods more enjoyable and less fatiguing.

Ink flow: Fountain pens use water-based ink that flows continuously from the nib, allowing for consistent and even lines. Ballpoint pens, on the other hand, use an oil based ink that requires more pressure to get the ink to flow, which can mean the ink skips, resulting in an uneven appearance. The increased pressure can also result in hand fatigue.

Personalisation: Many fountain pen enthusiasts appreciate the ability to personalise their writing experience by selecting different nib sizes, ink colours, and even customising the pen itself (Such as our engraving service). This allows for a unique writing experience that reflects one's individual preferences and personal style.

Environmentally friendly: Fountain pens are also more environmentally friendly than disposable ballpoint pens (Quality ballpoint pens are also environmentally friendly!), as they can be refilled with ink and used for years, reducing the amount of plastic waste generated by constantly replacing disposable pens. The ink cartridges from all major brands (Lamy, Parker, STABILO etc) are all fully recyclable. Extra points if you choose to use bottled inks!

Overall, while ballpoint pens may be more convenient and widely available, fountain pens offer a more enjoyable and customisable writing experience that many people find preferable.
